You President Mr Michael Forde Ripich came to our shipyard ( M/s TEBMA shipyards Ltd, Malpe, Karnataka State, India ) today and gave your company overview . HLAW is interesting as I am sure it will cut down weld time, and more importantly reduce distortion. In Ship building ie particularly in Hull fabrication, if a portable, HLAW machine can be thought of, it will be extremely useful ... Hull is nothing but a huge welded structure .. starting from plates, angles, etc and going on building.. so it is nothing but fabrication, fitting, welding, avoiding distortion as much as possible.. a lot of work is done in situ.. and so the need for portable welding machines whereever possible..

I know I am saying this to a Specialist Fabricator ! ( who may not be in machine building activity, but if you can think of an affordable, portable HLAW machine, it may have a big market.. I am sure you will understand welding /fabrication needs of the ship building industry and more so when you are thinking of JV etc with an Indian firm..

I had expressed the above to you President today also. and requested him to look into this aspect while going around our shipyard...
regards, DS Gopalan, Professional- Projects, Tebma Shipyards Ltd, 8th June 2011

I agree that the laser welding will reduce production time and costs as well as produce the most consistent components. That's the reason I salute the company who is using this method.
